Summary/Description: Just before the Mapuche Indians were preparing for an attack on the Spaniards, a comet fell among them, on Saturday at midday, and which was seen by many Christians at the Spanish fort as it traveled with greater brightness than other comets, and from which, once fallen, a beautiful woman came out, also dressed in white, who told the Indians. “I serve the Christians, don’t go against them because they are very brave, and will kill you all.” The Indians did not follow her advice and continued with their plan, only to face defeat at the hands of the Conquistadores shortly afterward, just as it had been foretold.
Investigative Analysis
The 1540 sighting in Chile represents a remarkable example of High Strangeness occurring during the early colonial period. What was described by witnesses as a “comet” exhibiting controlled flight and a soft landing suggests a phenomenon that transcends standard 16th-century celestial observations. In modern ufology, this event is categorized as a Close Encounter of the Third Kind (CE-III) due to the direct interaction with an animate being associated with the object.
The appearance of the “woman in white” following the descent of the object is a recurring motif in historical accounts, often interpreted through the religious and political lenses of the era. Her specific warning to the Mapuche Indians regarding the bravery and impending victory of the Spanish Conquistadores highlights how these anomalous encounters were often perceived as divine or prophetic interventions. Documented by researchers like Chris Aubeck, this case serves as a vital bridge between indigenous oral traditions and European historical records, showcasing a systematic presence of unidentified aerial phenomena long before the modern era.
