Recreation of the 1965 Conway sighting: three spherical objects maneuvering over Moat Mountain as observed through a 6-inch telescope.
THINK ABOUTIT UFO SIGHTINGS REPORT
Date: September 3, 1965
Sighting Time: 01:00 AM
Day/Night: Night
Location: Conway, New Hampshire
Urban or Rural: Behind Conway Elementary School in parking lot. No lights there in 1965. Looking west southwest over Moat Mountain in Albany, NH. No military bases or power plants near Conway. This occurrence happened after 12 midnight. I had gone down there initially to look at stars etc. with my 6 inch Newtonian telescope. I was 16 years old and had just gotten my driver license and was driving my father’s 1964 Ford auto.
Entity Type: None Reported
Entity Description: N/A
Hynek Classification: NL (Nocturnal Light) Point or extended luminous source observed at night.
Duration: Possibly 20 minutes to 30 minutes
No. of Object(s): 3
Appearance / Description of the Object(s): The three objects were starlike but very brilliant. When I signaled the one remaining object it flared up to many times its original brilliance in response to my headlight experiment. I would have to estimate the objects as being spherical in shape but this is only a guestimate but they never appeared as oval or disclike during their maneuvers. However I cannot be sure.
Distance to Object(s): Distances of jets and objects unknown but the one object I signaled zipped from being over the peak of Middle Moat Mountain to the zenith over me in just seconds. Then it shot straight up and out of sight in mere seconds.
Shape of Object(s): spherical
Size of Object(s): I cannot comment on the actual size as I had no way to know their distance. However, they were many times brighter than the running lights on the jet aircraft when in view with my naked eyes.
Color of Object(s): very brilliant
Number of Witnesses: 1
Special Features/Characteristics: Responded to headlight signals; flaring brilliance; silent, rapid vertical ascent
Source: Reported To Think AboutIt by H
Summary/Description:I saw and heard several large jet aircraft in the distance over and behind Moat Mountain with 3 very brilliant starlike objects maneuvering over the mountain at the same time. They would disappear behind the mountain and then pop into view rising above the mountain and performing circular and left to right maneuvers exceeding several degrees of arc which precludes parallax as an explanation! Parallax never causes a star to apparently move more than 1/2 degree of arc!
The jets left the area several times but came back into view 2 or 3 times. There might have been 4 or 5 aircraft but I cannot recall the exact number. I could faintly hear jet engines off in the distance and see their running lights with my naked eye. When the jets arrived the ufo objects would disappear behind Moat Mountain. When the jets were no longer in view the objects would again appear over the mountain. Their ability to maneuver was amazing. I had goosebumps on my arms as the strangeness was affecting me!
There was no abduction. However, somehow I got the idea of pulling the car forward as to get the front wheels up onto the curb of the parking lot to get my headlights elevated higher so I could try signaling the objects. At that time no jets were seen or heard by me but 2 of the objects again went down behind the mountain. I flashed my headlights on and off 3 times. The one object flared up brilliantly 3 times. I repeated this several times and got the same response.
After the last time I signaled the remaining object I got out of my car thinking I would try to get my telescope trained on this object. Seconds after having this thought I saw this object, within about 3 or 4 seconds fly to the zenith directly over me and vertically climb out of sight within seconds. I felt very strange but elated for some reason. The behavior of these objects strongly suggested intelligent control and flight capabilities way beyond anything I could imagine. I strongly considered that I had established a primitive form of communication with the intelligence behind this object.
Technical Analysis: Newtonian Observation and Parallax
The witness’s use of a 6-inch Newtonian telescope is a critical detail in this 1965 sighting. This specific type of telescope, which uses a concave primary mirror to collect and focus light, allows for far greater clarity than naked-eye observation. By utilizing this equipment, the observer was able to distinguish the objects as brilliant spheres rather than standard celestial bodies or aircraft.
The Parallax Factor
A standout technical aspect of this report is the witness’s dismissal of parallax as a possible explanation. Parallax is the apparent displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight. As noted in the report, stars typically do not appear to move more than 1/2 degree of arc due to this effect. However, the objects over Moat Mountain performed maneuvers exceeding several degrees of arc, effectively ruling out common astronomical misidentifications.
Responsive Intelligence Experiment
Perhaps the most unique element is the headlight experiment. By flashing the headlights of a 1964 Ford three times, the witness received an identical, immediate response from the remaining object, which flared up in brilliance three times in return. This interaction suggests a high level of intelligent control and a possible attempt at primitive communication, setting this case apart from passive Nocturnal Light (NL) reports.
Witness Profile: A Rural New Hampshire Setting
In 1965, the area behind Conway Elementary School was a prime location for astronomical observation due to the total lack of artificial light pollution. The witness, then a sixteen-year-old with a newfound sense of freedom provided by a fresh driver’s license and his father’s 1964 Ford, represents a classic demographic of mid-century UFO observers: the curious hobbyist. At the time, Conway was a quiet, rural town with no nearby military installations or power plants that could account for the strange aerial maneuvers observed over Moat Mountain.
The Solitude of the Observation
The fact that this event took place after midnight in a secluded parking lot allowed for a focused, uninterrupted study of the sky. The witness’s decision to engage the objects using his car’s headlights transformed a passive sighting into an active, two-way encounter. This level of initiative is rare in historical reports and suggests a witness who was not only observant but scientifically inquisitive, seeking to test the nature of the “starlike” lights he was tracking through his Newtonian telescope.
Emotional Resonance
Beyond the technical data, the witness mentions the physical sensation of “goosebumps” and a feeling of being “elated” after the objects departed. These physiological and emotional responses are frequently cited in Close Encounter cases and serve as a powerful indicator of a genuine, high-strangeness event that leaves a lasting psychological impact on the observer.
Summary of Findings: The Conway Anomalies
The September 3, 1965 event near Moat Mountain presents several key findings that align with high-strangeness Close Encounter cases:
-
Intelligent Response: The object’s immediate and identical reaction to headlight signals strongly indicates an interactive intelligence rather than a natural phenomenon.
-
Kinematic Capabilities: The transit from the mountain peak to the zenith in mere seconds, followed by a direct vertical ascent out of sight, describes flight capabilities that exceeded the jet aircraft seen in the area at the time.
-
Observational Validity: The use of a 6-inch Newtonian telescope allowed the witness to rule out stars and standard aircraft, identifying the objects as distinct, brilliant spheres.
-
Lack of Conventional Explanation: The absence of local military bases or power plants, combined with maneuvers that precluded parallax, leaves the objects’ origin unidentified.
