1962: August UFO & Alien Sightings

Summary: I was playing outside my home as a child of about 11 or 12 in Savannah, Ga. on a summer evening in the early 1960’s, around 6pm or so, when my companions and I saw some kind of aircraft that flew low over the neighborhood. We ran toward it, and as it seemed to hover, quite low, we could look right up inside of it– it was a large, round or oval(disk shaped) craft with a row of lights around the perimeter of the underside of it. The lights seemed to move around the perimeter of the craft. We could see what seemed to be a bright hazy light coming from what appeared to be the bottom of, or inside of the aircraft. After hovering, it moved away, but continued at a very low elevation for quite a while– all of the kids on our street who were outside ran after it for as long as we could before losing sight of it. As long as we were fairly close to it, we could hear a rather strange whirring or whooshing noise. As my mother had gotten a glimpse of it from inside the house and the porch, she called and made a report to the police department. The next day there was a small article in the Savannah newspaper stating that there were numerous reports of the sightings, but the air force had determined that it was actually a weather balloon. However, I don’t think it was, judging from my memory of the object. There was nothing about it to suggest a balloon of any kind. I have long been curious about any other reports of this sighting, but have been unable to find any, and the Savannah Morning News cannot even find the small article about the sightings in their archives (I’m not positive about the date, or even the year, but am fairly certain it would have been the early 1960’s). I am a college graduate, professional woman, married to a law enforcement professional. I’ve never observed any other UFO type objects at any time before or since. No of observers: 15

Summary: I was seven years of age playing on our front lawn, my mother was out in the side yard hanging up the laundry on a close line. The event that was about to take place at that time is forever etched in my mind. Back in 1962, my mom, dad, little brother and I, lived in northern Manitoba, Canada on a large hobby farm. Our nearest neighbour was 1/4 of a mile away. To my knowledge, nobody else in the area seen what my mom and I saw on that warm August afternoon. A slow moving object caught my attention from the corner of my eye. I looked up over the garage located across our front yard and saw a large football shaped flying craft. It was approximately 100 feet away from me, flying approximately 30 feet above the ground. The craft was approximately 20 feet wide and 10 feet high. There was no sound of a motor. This craft seemed to be very high-tech as it had no wings or engine to be seen. The occupants of the craft must have known there was life forms on the ground, namely our family. I believe they said “Hello!” with a spectacular display of lights which illuminated there craft in top to bottom (3 foot) strips of blue, green, red, yellow, and other fascinating colors. The craft changed direction as it flew over the garage from north to east. At this point my mother looked up from her cloth line and saw the slow moving craft (traveling at approximately 10 miles per hour) heading in a eastern direction. I seen this object with my own eyes…we are not alone in the universe. Perhaps there are many types of life forms from far away places roaming the sky above and walking among us. Another unexplained encounter happened during the summer of 1975 in the province of British Columbia, Canada. I was walking in a rugged open area 200 feet from the Fraser River when an unusual object caught my attention. There on the ground was a foot long cylinder and about 10 inches around with rounded ends. As I looked down at this object I noticed it’s mirror-like appearance. As I looked closer I noticed there wasn’t a scratch on the metal-like object. I reached down and picked up the object, it seemed to weight about 5 lbs. From that moment on until I found myself walking away from the area…I have no memory of what happened. I still search my mind today and ask myself what happened to the strange cylinder? I would have never put it back on the ground. I know I would have take! n it wit h me to find out what it was. Today, I believe that what I saw and held in my hands was a landed probe from outer space. Perhaps the same type of probes seen flying over crop circles throughout the world. Whatever I held in my hand could have had a hand in the loss of my memory. I believe it did.

Summary: Object approached from the south east appearing flat and coming directly at us. As it came close it turned and stopped. It was triangular with pinkish lights around the exterior that could have been windows. It made no sound. My Dad went inside and called the USAF in Portland and they gave no indication of acknowledgement. He came back outside and it slowly moved to the west and then shot off to the south west in a burst of extreme speed. It was close and extremely visible. I have lived with this sighting all my life and only recently from some of the TV shows have decided to tell this story. No photos just amazement.

Summary: It has been a long time since this event occurred. It happened in August of either 1962 or 1963. I was visiting my aunt at the Jersey shore. We decided to take her dog for a walk around 11PM. We walked up to the beach road where we could see the shore and the ocean. An object was in the sky. It wasn’t an airplane because it moved too slowly. It wasn’t a helicopter because it moved too smoothly and made no noise. It had yellow and white lights. We could not make out the shape but by the position of the lights, I’d say it was curved. It came in our direction, hovered, then took off at an acute angle without the body of the ship changing direction. It sped off quickly and disappeared over the ocean. We never reported it. (I posted this a couple of days ago but I don’t see it) In August of 1962 or 1963, my aunt and I took her dog for a walk around 11PM. We saw a UFO with white and yellow lights. It moved too slowly to be an airplane, and glided too smoothly to be a helicopter. It made no noise. We watched it for a few minutes until it too off at on a sharp angle without turning around. It disappeared over the Atlantic. I would say it was going northeast in the direction of NYC. We never reported it then. I’m pretty sure the month was not earlier than August and certainly not later than Labor DAy weekend. We could not make out its shape. By the position of the lights, I’d say it had some curves.

Summary: I am a Special Education teacher with two Masters degrees. This incident took place in 1962 or 1963. I was 5 or 6 years old at the time. My older brother and I were playing outside at the railroad tracks behind my Grandmother’s house in the country. I remember it being very warm, and sunny that day. I don’t recall who saw them first, but we stood there and watched in wonder. I was watching Unexplained Mysteries, Destination Earth today, and found out what we saw were rare, and called cluster UFO;s. At first it looked like one large craft with seperate, circular, bright red lights. It made no sound. They seemed to be following the railroad tracks at a slow speed. “It” then stopped, and hovered for a time. Then, to our amazement, it broke apart, and all but approx. 6 crafts sped off at high speed. Each of those that sped off didn’t travel far because we could see them. All once they stopped. The main group remained hovering in it’s original spot. The crafts that sped off, and stopped abruptly, also hovered for a short period of time, and then sped just a quickly, all in unison, back to the main group. This “dance” continued for a couple more times, and then began to move together at a slow speed, getting closer to us. I don’t know how my Grandmother became aware of what we were watching, but she began yelling for us in a panicked voice to come into the house immediately. I don’t recall how long she yelled for us, but we were mesmerized, and didn’t move. The next thing I remember, my Grandmother came running for us, grabbed us, and ran panicked back into the house. She locked the doors, and then called my Aunt who lived 1/8 of a mile away, as well as an Uncle who lived the same distance away. All had children, and to listen to my Grandmother talking on the phone, it was obvious that everyone also saw what we were watching. We were not frightened in any way, but the adults were very frightened. I have no idea how long they stayed, how long they performed their “dance”, or where they went from there. I have always told this story when the subject comes up. I relive the story quite often, as it seemed as thought it happened yesterday.

Summary: I was coming home and found myself being followed by small gray “things” – I cannot explain more. They were nebulous and indistinct. I know I was afraid. I had been playing in an old rail yard behind our block (lots of sand hills). I was headed home alone. Soon after this I discovered a small healed scar on the back of my thigh – yet I had not been hurt there (it was about 1-1.2 inches long). It showed some “weaving” type of skin growth between the two smooth edges and tiny pinpoints around the edges. It remained faintly white for many years. This was nearly 50 years ago and the memory has remained clear and insistent – like a toothache that has refused to go away. I am sharing this now – in the hope that it may help someone else who may have also encountered “something” strange during that time in this location (between 1958-1968). I had two, possibly three other things occur that I have also never spoken about (by the lake and in town – reported earlier).

Summary: A summer all day party at Bonney Lake, WA at my Aunt and Uncle’s lakeside cabin. They had a very sturdy larger dock, My grandmother had the house 3-4 lots west and in the north side of the lake, but did not have a dock over the water,so we were here frequently there in good Seattle weather. The party was here, as the best dock. Both dock/lots are are visible on google maps. I was 8 yrs old, and had 3 older brothers, 1 younger brother. My older brothers taught me things early as exposed to their bad behaviors. So I was aware. We had many family. cousins, and close friends at the party, it started at noon and last till midnight. My oldest brother was extremely smart for his age. After dinner most of the mom’s were inside cleaning, I was reading Archie comic books, not allowed outside near the dock or water as I had not learned to swim yet. After 900pm. my oldest brother and many cousins male and female were all sitting on the doc all 12-13yrs older, another Uncle was Seattle PD officer, his buddies and wives, drinking, smoking etc, and older relatives, most were outside as in Seattle area back in the 50-60s August was the best month for this, or it would have been raining. My oldest brother started shouting. : “UFO UFO,,,” ,quick or to that affect. Everyone inside the house ran to the dock area and kids there were all pointing and directing us to look up. My recollection was the light was outer atmosphere, very high, and was moving very very fast, and we had horizon to horizon view looking up and to the west – wide view!. The white light would zig-zag, and the strange part to me that I remember, was the flow was like if you are watching Speed Skating during the Olympics, and if you’ve seen how the skater on long track skates, the skater flow is left leg, right leg,. left leg. right leg continually kinda back/forth and this is what the light was doing zig-zagging left/right but moving fast, and when the left/right zig zag was right in the middle – the light would dim just a bit. So we all watched this light head west at a high rate of speed, 5 minutes towards the horizon – it was gone, Everyone was chatting, UFO this, UFO that…I headed back in with Mom and the other ladies I sat on the couch reading comics, again, and my oldest brother again a “quick outside, another UFO…hurry” we all ran outside and the same exact thing we saw first, a UFO very high speed zig-zagging through outer atmosphere same line of sight and same speed. Fummy part was that stuck with me was were were all in the same spot on the 2nd sighting. This UFO also all the way west until we could not see it. That was it. No Sound. …Interest: Art Bell show. I heard of Peter Davenport on the Art Bell show 1990s and went to Laughlin Nevada for the Intl UFO Congress symposium held back then, I think this was Richard Dolan’s first west coast appearance and I was there to see Peter Davenport & Dolan but I had never seen Peter Davenports picture. I was at the back door of the auditorium, door, river side, and something was going on, I do not remember. When I turned around a guy had the door open and said” Hey guys whats up…what are you doing?” I had a TWA DC-2/3 full color T shirt on, and the guy at the door was closest to me, and I said :” I’m here to see the Peter Davenport lecture………” He looks at me for a second or 3,,,and he says ” I am Peter Davenport” I was shocked……so I forgot what I mumbled to him, I may have shook his hand, and Peter stated he saw my TWA DC-2/3 Tshirt and tracked me down. Peter then told me his father worked for TWA St Louis MO and wanted to chat for a minute, but his lecture was next so in we went. My only brush w/fame in the UFO World. No of observers: 25

Summary: REturning form a fishing trip in late afternoon, my stepdad (an Army Sargent), myself, and three Soldiers under my stepdad’s command at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, saw a large elliptical object hovering over a highline power tower as we topped a hill looking West into the setting sun. The shape appeared in silhouette against the sun. The four lane highway was divided by a median down which stretched the highline towers. Below the object, at least 20 vehicles were pulled off the road into the median and people were out of the vehicles looking up at the object. When we arrived at the scene, my stepdad pulled off the road into the median and we all got out to look up at the object. From below, it appeared to be a large circular craft with a diameter of approximately 50 or sixty feet across. There appeared to be a section somewhat inside the outer rim that was turning counter clockwise, but it was very difficult to see this movement. While we watched, the craft made no sound that we could hear. After we had observed the craft for approximately 20 minutes without any noticeable change in it, we began to hear the sound of approaching helicopters approaching from the West from the direction of Lowery Airforce Base. As the three copters approached to about a mile distant, the craft above us began to silently move away toward the East. It seemed in no hurry to leave, and kept the distance between itself and the three copters approximately the one mile distance. We watched until the object and then the three copters had disappeared over the hill we had descended from, and then got back into our car and resumed our trip home. After we dropped off the three soldiers at their barracks on the base, we rove home, and my Stepdad, called Lowery Air Base to report the object. He was told they knew about it and requested he keep silent about the sighting. This is the first report I’ve made of the sighting to anyone. My stepdad is now dead and I can’t remember the names of the three soldiers, so I give this rep! ort on t he off chance that one of the other people who obviously saw the same object we did, will have already come forward with a report or will come forward if the read this, to substantiate the truth of this UFO sighting.

My father just laughed and said, check the time to be sure we did not lose time here. there was a blue flash that hit the car. My mother said, in a scared v0ice, lets get out of here. My father got out of the car and looked to see if anything happened to the car. While that, my mother was still telling him to get in the car so they can leave. He got back in the car and we left. Summary: I am not sure of the year. I was about 14 or 15 years old had been on a date with a young man I met at a church retreat. It was my first car date. I was hugging the door knob I was so shy. On the way back near Ann Arbor we saw a disc shaped object at about tree line maybe 100 yards away. It was probably 40 – 50 feet across. It was shiny light grey and had lights around it. Maybe even windows. We sat in the car and wondered what the heck it was. We were listening to the news on the radio, probably an Ann Arbor station… and they said a UFO had been sighted in the Ann Arbor area. We peeled out of there so fast. Because it was before I was driving, I wasn’t paying attention to roads and have no idea exactly where we were. I remember scooting to the middle of the car. The odd thing is that it took me years to remember it again. I thought people would make fun of me. I can’t even remember telling my Mom about it when I came home. Now I think about it a lot. I hear about people sighting “lights in the sky” and calling it a UFO sighting and think mine was huge compared to that. There were lots of UFO sightings in the Ann Arbor area and they were always “swamp gas”. This was no swamp gas. But I can’t find a record of a sighting in the 1961, 1962 or 1963 timeframe in this area. Lots in 1965.

Summary: The following event took place nearly 49 years ago. I was nine years old at the time of the event. It happened in mid Summer, and in broad daylight. There were two witnesses to the sighting, myself, and a friend that I will refer to as Willy. At the time, I lived very near one of the largest hills in Haverhill, Mass. We called the hill, Tilton’s Tower, because at one time there had stood a large, brick viewing tower atop the hill. The tower was long gone by 1962, and in its place was a large (200 ft. +/-) radio transmission tower, which was used to broadcast our local AM radio station. If it was used for anything else, I know not. The entire hill was otherwise devoid of any houses or buildings. It was a great place for us neighborhood kids to play and explore. On a bright sunny August day, my friend Willy and me decided to hike up to the top of the hill. We had made our own bows and arrows, by bending a branch for a bow, and using the straightest sticks we could find, as arrows. “Come on, let’s go to the top of Tilton’s Tower,” I said, “Maybe we can shoot a rabbit.” Willy and I climbed to the top where the grass was nearly waist high. We walked through the tall grass hoping to flush out a rabbit, but alas, the only thing jumping were grasshoppers. So that we might make some use of our bows and arrows, I got the idea that we could shoot our arrows straight up into the sky, and see whose arrow would go the farthest. “Okay!”, said Willy, “I’ll bet mine’ll go higher than yours!” We both drew back on our bows and pointing our arrows straight up. “Reday”, I said, “Aim… Fire!” “They went about the same height”, Willy said. “Okay, let’s try it again”, I said. So, again we pulled back as hard as we could on our bow strings, pointed our arrows up toward the sky and…. “Hey!” I yelled, “What’s that?” I lowered my bow, but kept my gaze straight up, for there in bright blue sky, was a silvery, shiny disk darting this way and that. “Hey! Do you see that?” “Yes”, Willie replied. The disk was bright silver, perfectly round, and moving in a zig zag pattern, that gave me the impression of the movement of a gyroscope. It tipped slightly, banked, moved forward and side to side. The sun was nearly directly overhead, and it almost seemed to playing tag with the sun. We stood and watched it for a minute or two. The size was about what a dime would be at arms length. “What is it?”, I said. “I don’t know… a Flying Saucer.”, said Willie. Suddenly, the first one was joined by a second. “Hey look! Now there’s two of them!!” I shouted. The two disks moved close to one another at the same altitude. While their movements were quite erratic, and while they crossed paths with each other, they didn’t collide. They both remained pretty much overhead during the entire sighting period. Then… in an instant… they were gone! “There gone!” said Willy. “Yeah, where did they go?”, I asked. We scanned the sky, but the two disks were no where to be seen. Needless to say, we hurriedly made our way down the hill. I’ve never forgotten that day. There is no doubt in my mind that the two disks that we both saw were real. Beyond a doubt, these were solid, controlled, flying objects, and could not have been anything else. I consider myself very fortunate to have had this experience.

Summary:
Rivalino da Silva, a diamond prospector, told his associates that he had seen two strange dwarfs digging a hole near his house. They ran away as he came near them, and moments later an object took off from behind the bushes. It was shaped like a hat and surrounded with a red glow.
Raimundo, the son of Rivalino da Silva (see previous case), was awakened by the sound of steps and saw “a weird shadow” in the room. It was small and not human in shape. Voices were heard saying, “This one looks like Rivalino,” and later that they would kill him. The family stayed on the alert all night.
Raimundo da Silva (see previous cases) testified before the police that while working in a field, he saw two spherical objects hovering 2 m above ground, a few meters from the house. One was black with an antenna-like protrusion and a small tail; the other was black and white. Both emitted a humming sound and a flickering fire through an opening. The boy’s father warned him to stay away as Rivalino walked toward the objects, praying. When he was 2 m away, the two spheres merged into one, raising dust from the ground and spreading a yellow mist that enveloped the man. The boy ran after his father, noting that the cloud had “an acrid smell.” As it dissolved, everything had vanished. Police investigation, headed by Lieutenant Lisboa, failed to reveal any clue. Many terrified people left the area.

Summary: Speeding light from horizon stopping and turning 90 degrees at high speed and then hovering overhead. My sister-in-law and niece were together with me in a back farm field (very dark) 5 miles east of the city. A bright light looking like a star moved very quickly from southern horizon approaching us and suddenly stopped directly over our heads — this took about 1 minute. It immediately turned 90 degrees and quickly sped away to west at same speed for about 5 seconds. It then came to a sudden stop and hovered clearly visible to us over- head. I checked every hour from 8 PM to midnight but it remained stationary. It remained looking like a star but impossible to determine altitude. To me as a medical doctor psychiatrist, it is impossible for light to stop and make a 90 degree turn at high speed. We saw no actual craft.

Summary: On the evening of August 30, 1962, the world was about to change drastically for a teenager named Anne Henson when she was plunged into a late-night UFO/bedroom encounter of a very weird kind. When I tracked her down, in the 1990s, Henson told me about the incident: “At the time that this happened, I lived on a dairy farm and was still at school; I was sixteen at the time. I actually moved back here with my family some years ago and we run a nursery business now. It was the middle of the night and something must have woken me up because I sat up in my bed and I could see through the window what looked like a round ball of light in the sky; my room over-looked the Brendon Hills. It seemed to change color from red to green to yellow and I could see a circle with rays of light coming from it. “At first I thought it was a star, but it wasn’t static. Then I thought that it must be a helicopter or something like that, but there was absolutely no sound from it. Well, it then began moving backwards and forwards and went from left to right. I was very intrigued by it because it was making fairly rapid movements. But it was the colors of the lights that attracted me first; they were nice bright colors. It would come towards me quite quickly and appeared to increase in size, and then reversed and moved sideways at a middle speed. But it always returned to its original position just above the hills.
“Over an hour or so, the light gradually receded until it was just like a pin-prick of light. Well, I went to sleep, but the next night I wondered if it might be there again – and it was. This happened on a few occasions and I got quite used to seeing it when it was a clear night. To be honest, I got quite friendly with it, really. I didn’t feel threatened by it, because although it came close to our farm, it didn’t come that close. Now, when I’d seen it a few times, I decided that I would get a compass and graph paper and try to track where it was coming from because this was intriguing me. I thought, this is a bit different.”
It was what happened when Henson approached officials that really set wheels in motion:
“After I saw the light for a few times and tracked the movements of it, I contacted [Royal Air Force] Chivenor. I told them what I’d seen and then I got a letter saying that my sighting was being looked at. Then this chap turned up at the house. It was an evening when he arrived for the first time, and he pulled up in this old black car; and when he came in the house he was wearing a black suit and tie. I would imagine that he was in his late thirties and I was most disappointed that he wasn’t wearing a uniform. He announced himself as a Royal Air Force official and, of course, I took it as such. To me, he was an authority, put it like that. He actually came to visit me on several occasions. I assumed he was from RAF Chivenor; he didn’t actually say so. I was a bit over-awed that somebody was actually coming to see me. Altogether,” Henson explained, “he came on three nights. On the first night he came up to my bedroom and we sat there waiting for the clouds to clear. Unfortunately, that night and the next night he came, we couldn’t see anything. So, he said that he would have to come back again. Now, on the third night, he saw it.”
Did he have any opinion as to what the phenomenon was?
“No, none at all, he was just concentrating on looking at it. But he was very cagey. He wasn’t very friendly, but he wasn’t nasty either. But on this night he took some photos of the light. He didn’t seem very surprised by what he saw. It was all very, very low-key, which I suppose is the way to play it if it was something unusual. If he’d have got excited, I’d have got excited. He then left and he took his camera and took my compass drawings and notes – and I never got them back. But before going he said that nobody else would believe what I’d seen and there was no point in me talking about it at school. At that age, you don’t want to be laughed at – and my family had laughed at me, anyway.”
Henson was puzzled about her bizarre experience: “I thought originally that it was some military object, but then the Ministry of Defense said it was a planet, although that didn’t explain the way it moved. Now, it all hinges on whether or not you believe in UFOs. I can’t see why there shouldn’t be life on other planets. And if there is, why shouldn’t they come here to have a look at us?”
men-in-black
Anne Henson’s case is a classic Man in Black encounter. It started with the sighting of a strange object and was followed by a visit from a dark-suited authority figure who warned her not to talk about what she had seen, and who confiscated her compass drawings and notes that displayed the movements of the phenomenon she had observed. But Henson’s account differs in one striking aspect to many other Men in Black accounts that remain unverifiable. The official files on her experience identify her mysterious, black-garbed visitor as an employee of the British Royal Air Force’s elite Provost and Security Services – the equivalent of the United States’ Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI). That an organization of this caliber would take a keen interest in the subject of UFOs is intriguing, to say the least.
The files, held at the National Archives, England, state: “”MISS ANNE HENSON, aged 16, said that on 30th August, 1962 between 10.30 p.m. and 10.55 p.m. she opened the window of her room which faces N.N.E. and saw a diminishing star-like object with what appeared to be red and green colored flames coming from it. It was slightly larger than the average star and appeared to be round. After about 21/2 minutes it became very small and she could only see it with the aid of binoculars. She was quite sure that it was not the navigation lights of an aircraft because she had seen these many times and could recognize them immediately.
“She did not look for it again until 17th October 1962, when she saw the object again which was partially obscured by fog. With the aid of binoculars she compared the object with several stars and noticed that the stars were silvery white whereas the object was red and green. Near to and above the object she noticed another exactly similar but smaller object. She noticed a difference in the color of the original object which was now emitting green and orange flames in the same way as before.
“MRS. C. HENSON, mother of ANNE HENSON, said that she had seen the object described by her daughter. She could offer no explanation as to the identity of the object but was of the opinion that it was not a star. She declined to make a written statement. A visit was made on 1st November, 1962 when the sky was clear and all stars visible. MISS HENSON, however, said that the object was not in view on this particular night. Observations were maintained for one hour but nothing was seen. MISS HENSON was asked to continue her observations and on the next occasion on which she saw the object or objects to compile a diagram showing its position in relation to the stars. This she agreed to do.
“On 28th November, 1962, the next available opportunity, [the witnesses address] was again visited. However, although observations were maintained for 2 hours the sky remained obscured and nothing was seen. MISS HENSON was interviewed and said that she had seen the objects again on two occasions and although she had compiled a diagram she had omitted to note the date. She said that she would again watch for the objects noting times and dates and compile another diagram which she will forward by post to this Headquarters.
“MISS HENSON reports unidentified aerial phenomena and provides a diagram showing their position in relation to stars. The objects have not been seen by the Investigator who cannot therefore give an opinion as to their identity. It is considered that MISS HENSON is a reasonable person, although at 16 years of age girls are inclined to be over-imaginative. However, MISS HENSON is supported by her mother, a person of about 50 years of age, who seems quite sincere. The matter should be brought to the notice of [the] Department at Air Ministry set up to investigate such phenomena.”
The Air Ministry concluded that Anne Henson encountered nothing stranger than a celestial body, such as a star or a planet – a theory that she strongly disagrees with.
