Hynek Classification: CE-I (Close Encounter I) Observation of an object in close proximity to the witness (i.e. within 500’)
Duration: 10-30 minutes?
No. of Object(s): 1
Appearance / Description of the Object(s): There was no reflection of any kind or light on the ship. Only the complete blackout of the stars in a symmetrical rectangle type shape that was the source of the vibration on a cloudless night that passed swiftly out to sea after slowly passing over valley. as big as a footy oval diameter. Altitude probably 100-200 feet but cant be sure. Higher than the little hills either side.
Distance to Object(s): 100-200 feet max above me.
Shape of Object(s): rectangle, huge, diameter as wide as footy oval and seemed to take several minutes to pass over me so length longer.
Color of Object(s): Blackout
Number of Witnesses: 1
Special Features/Characteristics: Low-frequency vibration, Window rattling, and Blackout silhouette
Source: Reported To Think AboutIt by Katherine
Summary/Description: Saw and heard giant black airship(?) fly out of mountains behind me and pass out to sea. Low vibration so intense caravan windows rattled.
I drove out of Melbourne alone and at dusk tired I pulled into quiet caravan park. in creek valley coming down from Otways to the Great Ocean Rd coast. I chose it because it looked less touristy and crowded. Cant remember name but may recall if I saw detailed map. Weirdly, the guy didn’t seem to want me to stay there….would think he’d be glad of business, only one other family there.I was scared to drive the dangerous road at night so I pleaded just one night and out early, and he grudgingly gave me caravan closest to front entrance. The other odd thing was that family with young children disappeared in the afternoon, though I didnt see any other van lights on or hear sound or smell cooking. I thought oh maybe they were just day visitors, but locked my door because it seemed odd. My van was odd too, old fashioned, tidy but like it hadn’t been stepped into for a year. Like a film set van.
The window at back of van facing back into valley was permanently blocked. I slept under full width front window, millions of stars out of the big city, framed between the valley sides, narrow valkey with flat grass and only a handful of vans. All empty except mine apparently. The width of the valley opening to the sky was maybe a footy oval diameter…
In the middle of the deathly quiet night, a very low humming vibration woke me, I could feel it in my stomach. It got more and more intense and strong. I have never heard anything like it and was terrified. At its loudest point the windows were vibrating and I felt it in my whole body. I then saw out the window an immense very neat straight edged black shape blocking out the stars completely over entire width of valley, travelling slowly over my van, I was literally frozen with terror, it passed over and straight out to sea, taking the vibration with it. My mind still cant comprehend how gigantic it was, or what it was. I was actually really afraid I wouldn’t be let leave after that, but in the morning put on cheery face and paid. Driven by curiosity as I left I asked if anyone heard anything, No he said cutting me off and turned away. Most unfriendly man I thought, and what the hell did I see?!
Technical Comparison: Blackout Rectangles vs. Standard Triangles
The 1994 Victoria sighting is technically distinct from the more common “Black Triangle” reports popularized during the late 20th century. While traditional triangles often feature corner-mounted luminous orbs, this object was described as a symmetrical rectangle characterized by a total absence of light. This “blackout” effect—where the object is perceived as a hole in the starfield rather than a solid, lit craft—suggests a highly advanced surface material capable of near-perfect light absorption or an active optical camouflage system.
Acoustically, the low-frequency humming that rattled the caravan windows provides a significant data point. In aero-acoustics, such a sound often indicates a massive displacement of air or a propulsion system that utilizes high-energy resonance. The fact that the witness felt the vibration in their stomach suggests infrasonic frequencies, which are often reported in sightings of large, low-altitude UAPs. At an estimated altitude of 100-200 feet, a conventional aircraft of that scale would produce a deafening roar and significant wind turbulence; however, the “deathly quiet” environment followed by a localized vibration points toward a non-ballistic, possibly electro-gravitic, propulsion method.
Furthermore, the scale of the object—described as having a diameter as wide as a “footy oval”—places it in the category of Large-Scale Anomalies. This physical size, combined with the slow, deliberate passage over the valley, differentiates it from civilian drones or military stealth aircraft like the F-117 Nighthawk, which are significantly smaller and generally operate with audible jet turbines. This case remains a vital example of urban-adjacent anomalies where the physical environment (window rattling and ground vibration) provides corroborative physical evidence for the witness’s observation.
The aftermath of the Victoria Blackout Triangle sighting introduces a compelling sociological layer to the encounter. The witness’s description of the caravan park manager’s uncooperative and “unfriendly” demeanor when asked about the event suggests a potential pattern of local dismissal or even prior awareness of such anomalies in the Otway Hills region. In many high-strangeness cases, the behavior of site authorities or residents can serve as a secondary anomaly, often characterized by a “nothing to see here” attitude that contradicts the physical evidence of window-rattling vibrations and massive visual silhouettes.
Ultimately, this report stands as a significant record of a Close Encounter of the First Kind (CE-I) where the object’s physical size—comparable to a football oval—and low-altitude transit were undeniable. As urban-adjacent sightings continue to grow in the digital age, the 1994 Great Ocean Road incident remains a vital benchmark for researchers studying the physical effects of massive, silent, “blackout” aerial craft.
